Things that SEGSO organizes for students to participate in.

SEA 1st General Meeting

What:  The Structural Engineers Association (SEA) 1st General Meeting will be welcoming Matthew Parkolap and James Pawlikowski from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). SOM is one of the largest and most influential architecture, interior design, engineering, and urban planning firms in the world! They have worked on some of the most innovative and renowned structures around the globe including the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. They’ve even worked close to home, helping to design and build the Sears Tower and Millennium Park.

At this meeting they will discuss their work in designing the Tianjin CTF Finance Center in Tianjin, China. This skyscraper will be the 5th tallest building in the world, reaching 96 stories! They have even designed it to reach LEED Gold Standards. Construction is projected to be completed by 2016.

Plus, there will be free pizza served at the meeting! This is a meeting you will definitely not want to miss.

Reflections on Graduate School and Post-Graduation Decisions
Congratulations! You have made it to – or hopefully almost through- your grad school. That is probably one of the most important decisions you have made in your life. Its impact goes far beyond the few years you are spending here to affect your career options, friends’ network and in many cases your perception of your role as an engineer. In this presentation I will share some tips on how to “survive” – passionately- in grad school and what to consider when trading off between post-graduation careers in academia and industry.
