16th Annual Structural Engineering Conference

Registration for 16th Annual Structural Engineering Conference is now open!

What: The conference is designed for professionals in structural engineering to gather in Champaign-Urbana to discuss exciting new developments in the field, gain timely job-related information, network with colleagues, and renew their sense of professional purpose.

When: April 7th, 2015, from 8am to 6pm.

Where: I-Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign, IL.

Registration: Full-time students may attend the conference at no cost and may purchase lunch for $12. Students must pre-register by March 31, 2015.

Trivia Night @ Mike n Molly’s

What: We will be meeting up at Mike n Molly’s next Wednesday for the first night of trivia of the semester! Come for some friendly competition and enjoy food/drink in downtown Champaign with members of SEGSO!

When: Wednesday, February 11th. Meet n Greet will start at 7:30 pm (new students are specially encouraged to come at this time). The trivia will begin at 8:00 pm.

Spring 2015 General Meeting

Welcome back to all continuing students, and welcome to UIUC to all those of you who are new to CEE Structures graduate programs!  SEGSO will host the first general meeting of the semester this week:

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill Office Visit

SEA is organizing a group visit of 15 people to the headquarters of SOM in Chicago. This is to introduce students to the biggest structural engineering firms and the kind of work they do in a professional setting. SEA will also provide free transportation and free lunch at Giordano’s.
We do need some help however. In order to take 15 people, we are looking for volunteers to help drive us to downtown Chicago. Drivers will be reimbursed completely for the gas and toll bills.

There are only a few open spots remaining and preference will be given to those who can drive.

When: Friday, January 23

“Building Golden Gate Bridge”, by Raymond Giroux

What: The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) Chapter will be hosting a lecture by Raymond Giroux, recipient of the ASCE’s prestigious Civil Engineering History and Heritage Award for 2013. In his talk, entitled “Building Golden Gate Bridge”, Mr. Giroux will utilize a combination of historic photographs and dynamic animation techniques to bring the construction of the bridge to life, providing an unique learning opportunity.

When: Friday, November 21st, 12pm to 1:15pm

Concrete Materials and Construction Innovations: Illinois Tollway $12B “Move Illinois” Project

What? Ross Bentsen, P.E. of Quigg Engineering will be sharing some of the concrete materials and construction innovations that the Illinois Tollway has recently evaluated as part of the Tollway’s $12 billion Move Illinois capital program. See the attached abstract for more details.

EERI Lecture: Lessons to Civil Engineering Practice from the 2010 Chilean Earthquake

What? Rod Betanzo, Fulbright Scholar and Graduate Research student at the University of Illinois, will be giving a lecture on the devastating 2010 Chilean earthquake. Rod will discuss the direct impacts of the earthquake of magnitude (Mw) 8.8, and its general significance to civil engineering practice. Click on the abstract below for more details.
