CMAA: Chicago Site Visit – Kiewit

What? There are still open spots to visit a Kiewit road construction project (that is utilizing a unique construction method for this type of project). Also a great opportunity to network with Kiewit if you are interested in post-graduation job opportunities. Hard hats and safety glasses will be provided, attendees must wear long pants and closed toed shoes.

When? Friday, April 24th, leaving from campus 9-10 am for 1pm site visit, return around 4:30pm

ACI Lecture: “Using NDT as a Tool in Concrete Structure Evaluation” by Malcolm Lim, P.E.

What? Malcolm Lim, P.E. of Proceq Technical & Application Services will be sharing some of the state-of-the art nondestructive testing (NDT) methods, including case histories, and also future trends in NDT.

When? Thursday, April 23rd, 6pm

Where? 3310 Newmark Civil Engineering Lab

“Structural Engineering: More than Designing a Structure,” a lecture by David Cocke

What: EERI we will be hosting a lecture by David Cocke, principal of Structural Focus and Board of Direction of EERI National. In his presentation, David will explain some of their philosophy and strategies, as well as review several case studies including Red Bull, Annenberg Center for Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, 3Labs, Agensys and the historic Wilshire Boulevard Temple restoration. David will also introduce you to their latest work with community resiliency involving post-disaster inspection programs.

When: Friday, April 17th, 12pm to 1:15pm

Blue Waters Supercomputing Facility Tour

What: SEGSO is hosting a tour of the Blue Waters supercomputing facility. Blue Waters is one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, and is the fastest supercomputer on a university campus. Scientists and engineers across the country use the computing and data power of Blue Waters to tackle a wide range of challenging problems.

When: Friday, April 3rd, 2015 at 12:50 pm.

Where: National Petascale Computing Facility, 1725 S. Oak St., Champaign, IL. We will be meeting at the front entrance of the building (corner of Oak St and St. Marys Rd)

Note: If you need a ride, please email Julia (jplews2@illinois.edu). There are metered parking spots on the Northwest side of Lot E 14 (across the street). 

State Farm Center Site Visit

What: The first concrete-domed sports structure in the world, the State Farm Center, an architectural and engineering marvel on the University of Illinois campus, celebrated its 50th birthday in a big way in early March 2013. And now it becomes even better. The Illinois Renaissance project is set to dramatically renovate and improve State Farm Center. Estimated at $169.5 million, it will be one of the most ambitious building improvement projects in U of I history, and will benefit everyone – students, alumni and visitors from near and far – for decades to come. In this special site visit organized by S.E.A, we will be joined by the Structural Engineer of the Project – Dick Drew, P.E., S.E. – to give us a tour of the site and talk about all the cool structural engineering that is going to be a feature of the new and improved State Farm Center.

When: Thursday, April 2nd, 2015 at 3:45 pm

Where: State Farm Center. We will provide transportation to the site and back.

ACI Illinois-UIUC Joint Meeting: “High Performance Concrete” by Stephen Fleming, P.Eng

What? Mr. Stephen Fleming, P.Eng is the Technical Services Director for Prairie Material. He has 19 years’ experience in the cement and concrete industry, and has worked with a wide range of concrete mix designs, including high-performance concrete which he will be speaking about at the joint meeting. There will be professional members of ACI Illinois in attendance, this will be a great networking opportunity!
