Things that SEGSO organizes for students to participate in.

SEGSO Fall 2016 Student Research Seminar

SEGSO believes that a big part of research is effectively communicating your work to your audiences. Also, we know that many us would like to hear more about fellow students projects, what they are, and how they are doing. Therefore, we want to give you the platform to participate in our Student Research Seminar! It will be held on November 10. We want you to feel free to talk about any part of your work (or previous work) that you would be willing to show us.

The idea of the seminar is that each student can talk for about 10 minutes (using a PowerPoint presentation or any other tool he or she might find useful) and then allow some room for questions. This is a good opportunity to practice your presentation skills and gain confidence in a casual setting and in front of a friendly audience. If you are interested, please let us know by emailing segso.uiuc@gmail.com

What? Great presentations of your fellow classmates, hope that many of you can attend to support them and learn about their research.

SE Apprentice Web Seminar Series

Are you a Student in Civil/Structural Engineering who would like to learn additional technical information to help you start your career as a structural engineer?

Carrie Bremer, PE of Schaefer and Stephen Metz, PE of SMBH are excited to be involved in SE Apprentice, aimed at bringing examples of real-world engineering problems to students.

In a carefully crafted series of presentations, Carrie and Stephen will guide students through the design of an actual project – the South Central Chiller Plant Generator Building at The Ohio State University. This series aims to present ideas and concepts not typically learned in class, and combine these with real world knowledge of how a building and project come together, to help give students an idea of what to expect on a project they would work on in the office.

Currently on the schedule for SE Apprentice are the following four live web seminars:

Session 1: Loads; What are they and Where do they Come From?

Thursday, October 15th:  6:00 – 7:00 pm EDT

Session 2: Structural Systems and Load Paths

Wednesday, October 28th:  6:00 – 7:00 pm EDT

Session 3: Design and Coordination

Thursday, November 12th:  6:00 – 7:00 pm EST

Session 4: Contract Documents

Wednesday, November 18th:  6:00 – 7:00 pm EST

All sessions will begin at 6pm Eastern Time, and last for 60 minutes.

These sessions will be most applicable to Seniors and Graduate Students, and may also be helpful for younger students.

GESO: “Smart Infrastructure and Construction,” by Prof. Kenichi Soga (University of Cambridge)

What? The application of emerging technologies to advanced health monitoring of critical infrastructure assets will reduce the risk of failure. Emerging technologies will also transform the industry through a whole-life approach to achieving sustainability in construction and infrastructure in an integrated way – design and commissioning, the construction process, exploitation and use, and eventual de-commissioning. This talk will introduce several case studies of applying technologies for monitoring the conditions of underground structures in London and discuss how engineering decisions were made from the data.
